The aim of the article: to outline the contribution of the Ukrainian Scientific and Technical Society of Forest Industry and Forestry to the development of the industry in the Ukrainian SSR in the second half of the 20th century on the basis of archival documents of the Central State Archive of Higher Authorities and Administration of Ukraine (fund 4645), which are introduced into scientific circulation for the first time.

Modern concepts of intellectual socio-cultural space, interpersonal communication of scientists, processes of institutionalization of natural science, formation of scientific corporations of scientists, transmission of scientific knowledge in society, etc. became the theoretical and methodological basis for the preparation of the paper.

The history of the society’s creation is highlighted, its quantitative composition, structure, leadership and operating conditions are analyzed. Through the prism of the activity of the branch sections of the society (forestry and land reclamation; logging and transport; green construction; forest chemistry and forest pruning; woodworking; product standardization and quality; economy and organization of production; labor protection; publishing; professional development, etc.) its participation in the movement for the scientific organization of work, widespread in the mentioned period, is reflected. In particular, the main forms and methods of the society's work are defined as: conducting scientific and technical conferences, seminars, debates; participation in the socialist competition for the best developments; publication of professional literature, including works of the society, results of competitions, etc.; lecture activity; organization of industry sections, public universities, scientific business trips, excursions; creation of target committees for the research of scientific and technical issues; opening of houses of engineers, museums, technical offices and libraries; organization of technical consultations; conducting public reviews of books, magazines, activities of research institutes, etc.
