The article is devoted to issues of formation and organization of virtual exhibitions – an important and promising direction of activity of modern information institutions. The study presents and summarizes the experience of organizing and conducting virtual documentary exhibitions of the leading cultural and informational institutions of Kirovohrad Region, in particular the Regional Universal Scientific Library named after D. I. Chyzhevskyi and the State Archive of the Kirovohrad region. Their structure and thematic direction are defined. The role of software in the organization of virtual exhibitions is considered, which should satisfy the needs of operational recording, collection, processing, storage, search and transmission of documentary information, as well as the provision of this information at any time and in a convenient form for any structural department of information institution and its users. Possibilities for its improvement and increasing the efficiency of its use have been identified.

Attention is focused on the need to develop a targeted comprehensive program of socio-scientific and electronic communication in the network of information institutions of Ukraine, as well as the implementation of international standards in this field.
