Summary

The research is dedicated to the study of the peculiarities of E. Shpachynsky's activity as the founder of the popular science journalism in the territory of Ukraine in the late nineteenth century. The research used a set of methods, among which, first of all, comparative-historical and historical-retrospective methods should be mentioned. In addition, the author used the substantive analysis the analysis of the publication's information and the synthesis of logical references and conclusions, as well as the generalization of facts presented in the publications and the systematization of descriptions of the events from the life and editorial activities of E. Shpachynsky. In the process of quantitative analysis, the author used text quantification, collection of empirical data, their generalization and mathematical and statistical processing.

The study found that: During his editorial and publishing activities (1886-1897) in the «Bulletin of Research Physics and Elementary Mathematics», E. Shpachynsky managed to establish the existence of a popular science physics and mathematics periodical in the territory of Ukraine, uniting around it the best forces of popular scientists, creative teachers, connoisseurs of physical and mathematical knowledge, and realizing in its program a reliable connection with the needs of teaching physics and mathematics in the preparation of the students.

In the Bulletin, E. Shpachynsky continued V. Yermakov's program in elementary mathematics, expanding it with information on physics. Along with the articles on traditional and well-known objects of physics and mathematics, the Bulletin published a large number of articles that opened new horizons in these sciences and provided information on the results of new research.

During the period of his editorial activity, E. Shpachynsky managed to unite a wide range of pedagogical community to discuss the most important issues of teaching mathematics and physics on the pages of the Bulletin.

E. Shpachynskyi personally conducted an active and versatile editorial activity of the Bulletin as the author of various editorial reports.

The entire period of E. Shpachynsky's editorial activity was associated with a constant struggle with external negative circumstances of the Bulletin: the constant need for funds, the unwillingness of the education officials to support the existence of the periodical, and the lack of time for organizational activities. These circumstances prevented the full disclosure of the talent of a qualified experimental physicist, popularizer of scientific knowledge, and teacher-educator like E. Shpachynsky.
