The article highlights the activities of the outstanding Ukrainian zoologist and parasitologist O. P. Markevich. His contribution to the development of parasitological science, in particular to the creation of its separate direction – parasitocenology, is revealed. It was found that in the scientific literature, the theoretical and methodological developments of O. P. Markevich have not yet been properly disclosed, although they have great value for biological science.

The scientist's system of views reflected his scientific outlook on the global vision of nature. Therefore, the variety of topics and problems developed by O. P. Markevich (the origin and formation of the parasitofauna of fish, domestic animals and humans, theoretical-evolutionary and systematic-phylogenetic issues of general parasitology and many others), reflected his desire to create a unified system of views on the phenomena of the living world, to find out the most general regularities that manage.

The great role of academician O. P. Markevich in uniting and coordinating the efforts of parasitologists of Ukraine in the most relevant areas of combating parasitic diseases of humans and animals. On his initiative, the Ukrainian Scientific Society of Parasitologists was created.
