The purpose of the publication is to outline the role of the All-Ukrainian Society of Seed Production in the organization of the seed business in the 1920s, to analyze its activity in the areas of: search for varieties; selection; variety study and variety research; varietal propagation; seed cleaning and preservation; variety propagation, seed supply, export; variety description; inspection and control, etc.

Research methods: problem-chronological, comparative-historical, descriptive, source criticism.

It was established that the All-Ukrainian Society of Seed Production was an organization created by the state in the early 20s of the 20th century in order to implement state plans for arranging seed production. In addition, in the conditions of gradual limitation of private entrepreneurial initiative, the activity of AUSSP was aimed at socializing the seed business and introducing it into the direction of statehood and cooperation. Seed business is based on variety-seed production and variety testing, efforts have been made to strengthen the work of variety breeding stations and the variety testing network, coordination of activities with the Sugar Trust both in terms of program and methodology. The study of varieties in biological and economic-technical terms has been expanded, and a bet has been made on qualitative rationalization according to an organizationally developed and coordinated plan with agrotechnical and economic requirements (in particular, through the development of relevant norms for the registration of approved varieties, seed farms and seed trade).

AUSSP has become exemplary in the achievements of varietal study, zoning of Ukraine for the rational placement of varieties with the aim of restoring the varietal resources of the state and gradually replacing the seed material of inadequate quality among the population. It has been proven that with the help of the society, in 1923, the state variety testing was organized for the first time in Ukraine, in 1924, the approbation of varietal crops was introduced, and in 1926, state control over the quality of seeds was introduced.
