The main directions of search historical and local history work in school education institutions in the conditions of socio-cultural changes of 1985-1991 are reflected in the article. Historical and local history studies were one of the areas of educational work in secondary schools that needed democratic changes. Among the areas of historical and local history work in schools, it is possible to single out the organization and activity of school museums; cooperation with historical and local history and monument protection organizations; the implementation of search work, conferences, competition, etc. School museums and rooms of military glory, were considered important centers of patriotic education for students.

An important direction of the historical and local history work of school institutions was cooperation with the Ukrainian Society for the Protection of Historical and Cultural Monuments. It had 3 million schoolchildren in their centers at the beginning of 1987.

Despite the dominance of the Soviet ideology in organization of many historical and local history events, this work revived the cooperation of scientists, educators, mass media, and awakened interest in the history of their region and Ukraine. This was a positive phenomenon in the formation of the national foundations of Ukrainian education.
