The purpose of the article is to highlight and summarize the scientific heritage of the outstanding scientist-breeder, Doctor of Biological Sciences, Professor Lyubov Kalynivna Taranenko. The study is based on a review and analysis of scientific sources, documentary materials, statistical data; research methods – biographical, problem-chronological, objectivity, systematicity, analysis and synthesis. The article highlights the main stages of scientific creativity L. K. Taranenko, shows her significant contribution to the development of breeding and seed production of buckwheat – the leading cereal crop. The priority research areas were: the development of scientific foundations for buckwheat breeding; the study of the genetics of quantitative traits; the improvement and development of new methods of breeding, aimed at using the effect of heterosis in yield; the expansion of the polymorphism of the species Fagopyrum esculentum Moench through mutagenesis; polyploidy, distant hybridization with the aim of introgression of valuable traits from wild related species; increasing the level of adaptability of breeding material, etc. In addition, based on the mentioned research, the creation of a number of new competitive varieties registered in Ukraine and in other countries. L. K. Taranenko is the founder of the first private professional breeding and seed company in Ukraine «Antaria», the initiator of the creation of the International Buckwheat Association in Ukraine. The scientist worthily represented domestic science abroad, being a permanent member of the bureau of the International Buckwheat Researchers Association (IBRA). L. K. Taranenko made a significant contribution to the training of scientific personnel. At the same time, it is noted that at present the volume of crop production in Ukraine is insufficient, the yield of buckwheat remains low. The need to improve breeding and seed work is shown, its main directions are identified. It is proven that the scientific heritage of L. K. Taranenko – substantiated theoretical provisions, improved methods and techniques of breeding work, breeding material, varieties and hybrids – is of great importance for modern practical breeding.
