Summary

The article analyzes the role of Ukrainian statistical bodies in the second half of the 19th and early 20th centuries in shaping the national consciousness of the Ukrainian people. The primary focus of the research is the place of these institutions in the Ukrainian national revival, the expansion of their cultural and educational activities, and their contribution to collecting and systematizing data on Ukraine's socio-economic and cultural development. The study addresses the problem of limited scientifically grounded knowledge about Ukraine during a period when state institutions primarily performed technical and administrative functions. It demonstrates how statistical committees gradually acquired functions that extended beyond administrative tasks, transforming into important centers of scientific and cultural-educational activity. The aim of the article is to identify the role of provincial and zemstvo statistical committees in the context of the national movement, the formation of ethnographic and cultural heritage, and the dissemination of knowledge about Ukraine. The generalized results of the study indicate that statistical organs played a significant role in collecting and publishing data on demographics, economy, ethnography, and culture. These materials provided a foundation for scientific research, the formation of national memory, and the development of the idea of Ukrainian statehood. The article highlights the activities of prominent figures such as Oleksandr Rusov and Viktor Hoshkevych, whose efforts significantly influenced the development of local history, archaeology, and statistical studies. The materials of the article emphasize the transformation of statistical committees into scientific and cultural centers that played an important role in preparing the intellectual groundwork for Ukraine’s political and cultural revival.
