The article analyzes the functioning of the Nizhyn Archaeological Commission, which operated at the Prince Bezborodko Institute of History and Philology and became a significant center of scientific research for such prominent figures as Semen Andronovych Hatsuk. Based on the purpose of the study, the article analyzes S. A. Hatsuk's contribution to the work of the archaeological commission at the Prince Bezborodko Historical and Philological Institute in Nizhyn by using the available source base and existing scientific research.

The methodological basis of the study is represented by general scientific principles and methods of cognition, which are most appropriate in terms of comprehensive, complete and integrated coverage of the problem under study. Guided by the principles of scientism and historicism, the authors consider the problem under study depending on the specific social, economic, and realities of the Chernihiv province in the early twentieth century, which makes the material more interesting and accessible to a wide range of readers.

Despite the limited funding, the commission's activities made it possible to collect unique archaeological finds and documents, as well as to prepare materials for an ethnographic album of the Chernihiv province. The study found that the archaeological commission actively participated in the organization of the 12th archaeological congress in Kharkiv. The article provides an overview of the general tasks and achievements of the archaeological commission, its composition and certain aspects of its members' activities.

The article focuses on the contribution of S. A. Hatsuk to the work of the commission. Thus, it was found that Semen Hatsuk provided the commission with a significant amount of research materials that became important for ethnography and archeology.

In addition, the available sources covering the archaeological research carried out by S. A. Hatsuk in the territory of Chernihiv-Sivershchyna were analyzed and the value of his work for modern archaeological research was established.

Studying the archival materials, it was established that the scientific community of Nizhyn continued to influence archaeological research even after the termination of the commission, preserving the scientific potential and attracting new researchers.
