The purpose of this article is to highlight and summarize the scientific achievements in the field of forestry of the outstanding scientist-forester, academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR, Doctor of Agricultural Sciences, Professor Petro Stepanovych Pogrebnyak. The research methodology is based on the principles of historicism, objectivity, systematicity and comprehensive analysis of the problem. General scientific and historical methods of scientific research are applied – biographical, problem-chronological, objectivity, systematicity, analysis and synthesis.

This article states that a significant figure in the history of Ukrainian forestry science is Academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR P. S. Pogrebnyak – the founder of the scientific school in forestry, the developer of the edaphic grid of forest vegetation conditions types and the author of the theory of natural fertility of forest soils. Highlighted are the main stages of the scientist’s scientific work. It is noted that a significant influence on the formation of P. S. Pogrebnyak as a forest scientist was exerted by his mentor and head, Academician of the Ukrainian Academy of Forestry and Forestry Sciences and the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR G. M. Vysotsky. Significant contributions of P. S. Pogrebnyak to the development of steppe afforestation is shown – on the basis of paleogeological studies, the scientist established that pine forests once grew on the site of modern Oleshkiv sands in the south of Ukraine, which extend for tens of thousands of hectares and are the cause of dust storms. He substantiated the method of their afforestation by creating pine cultures using underground local peating of sands and using wild grass for mechanical protection of seedlings. He created the doctrine of forest typology, thanks to which P. S. Pogrebnyak is known abroad as the founder of the ecological forest typological school. He laid the foundations of a new scientific direction – comparative forest ecology. He contributed to the development of landscape geochemistry and initiated the scientific direction of landscape ecology. The first director and organizer of the Institute of Forestry of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR (1946–1956). He made a significant contribution to the development of forestry education – he published the textbook «General Forestry» (1963), which educated more than one generation of forestry students. It is shown that the scientific heritage of Academician P. S. Pogrebnyak is of great importance for modern forestry.
