Summary

This article examines the events of 1905 at the Kharkiv Technological Institute (hereafter KTI), which reflected broader socio-political changes in the Russian Empire and influenced the functioning of the higher technical education system. The study investigates the causes and consequences of the student unrest, the dynamics of interaction between students and faculty at KTI, and the impact of political ideas on the academic environment.

The research shows that the faculty at KTI was divided between proponents of traditional academic order – who upheld strict discipline and adherence to regulations – and instructors who supported student-led initiatives to democratize the educational process. A key figure in these events was Professor Vasyl Ivanovych Albitsky, a specialist in applied mechanics and hydraulics, who consistently advocated conservative views and the preservation of established academic traditions. His actions and public statements became a focal point in the broader conflict between conservative values and emerging modernization trends in higher technical education.

The article also analyzes the debate between faculty members (including M. D. Zuev, O. O. Shumilov and A. P. Psheborsky) and students (such as L. Rozenberg, A. Kleymenov and O. Predtechensky), which was published in contemporary periodicals, particularly the newspaper «Yuzhny Kray».

The study concludes that the events of 1905 at the Kharkiv Technological Institute highlighted the complex process of educational transformation under the influence of socio-political change. They underscored the growing importance of student self-governance, the need to respect academic freedoms, and the emergence of new approaches to managing educational institutions. These developments marked a significant step toward forming a new model of faculty-student relations that would later shape the evolution of the education system.
