Summary

Based on available data obtained over a certain period of scientific research tasks, this article analyzes results perceived as promising in the context of ensuring Ukraine energy security in its real and future prospects. The scientific research tasks faced by the team of the Verkhnyatska Experimental Breeding Station (VEBS) for 2014–2015 focused on studying the productivity of sugar beets (separately and as fodder beets) as an energy-efficient crop. Strategically, the issue of utilizing rapidly renewable energy sources emerged in the early 2000s, gaining legislative grounding through the Laws of Ukraine, including the «Law on Alternative Fuels» (2000). Over time, it became necessary to clarify the actual state of Ukraine energy sector. As a result of reflection and understanding of prospects from the standpoint of modern societal and scientific-technical thought, the «Law on Amendments to Certain Laws of Ukraine Regarding the Mandatory Use of Liquid Biofuels (Bio-Components) in Transport» (2024) was adopted. During this timeframe, VEBS researchers conducted scientifically grounded studies on the feasibility of cultivating experimental hybrids suitable for bioethanol production, improving specific elements of sugar beet cultivation technologies for bioethanol production, and analyzing fodder beet productivity for biofuel production depending on elements of bioadaptive cultivation technologies. Research findings indicated a high potential for using sugar (and fodder) beets to produce bioethanol and biogas from solid residues of processing technologies. Additionally, VEBS introduced miscanthus cultivation into its research tasks, studying its growth, development, and productivity for solid pellet biofuel production under different bioadaptive technology elements. The studies were conducted in the conditions of Ukraine Right-Bank Forest-Steppe. The necessity of utilizing high-yield beet varieties for bioethanol and other biofuel production is evident.
