Summary

The article examines the process of establishing agricultural museum institutions in Kyiv in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, tracing the stages of their formation, the main areas of activity, and the role of the museum within the structure of agrarian science and education. Based on archival documents, reports of the Kyiv Society of Agriculture, and specialized publications, the study reconstructs the circumstances surrounding the emergence of the idea to create a museum and identifies its connection with the development of extracurricular agrarian education and the public demand for the dissemination of practical knowledge. It is shown that the initiative to found the museum belonged to the activists of the Kyiv Society of Agriculture, among whom a significant role was played by the agronomist and public figure O. H. Garshyn, who proposed the concept of regional agricultural museums and traveling museum trains as a form of promoting agronomic knowledge. The article highlights the activities of the soil scientist H. H. Makhov, who in 1919 organized the Agricultural Museum at the Silbudynok in Kyiv and contributed to the revival of museum work during the establishment of Soviet authority. The contribution of other scholars and public figures involved in implementing the idea – particularly D. I. Pikhno and O. A. Yanata – as well as the role of the Agricultural Scientific Committee of Ukraine in shaping a unified system of agrarian museums is outlined. It is established that the work of the Kyiv museum reflected the broader trends of modernization in agrarian science and education and facilitated the integration of research, teaching, and outreach practices. The study emphasizes that the Kyiv Agricultural Museum became an important centre of scientific and educational activity, combining informational, instructional, and exhibition functions, and laid the groundwork for the development of agricultural museum infrastructure in Ukraine in the 20th century.
