Summary

The article reconstructs the biography of the renowned natural scientist of the Ukrainian lands, Polish by origin and Ukrainian by birth, the distinguished naturalist, botanist, zoologist, agrobiologist, founder of paleontological research in Ukraine, writer, and teacher – Antoni Andrzejowski (1785–1869). It was established that the graduate of the Higher Volhynian Gymnasium made his first botanical expeditions to Podillia, studying its floristic diversity; later he explored the Dniester region and the basins of the Southern and Western Bug rivers. Andrzejowski’s botanical journeys enriched not only botanical science but also the collection of living plants of the Kremenets Botanical Garden; he also made a significant contribution to the development of other botanical gardens and parks in the country. An important period of Andrzejowski’s scientific and educational activity was his work at the Department of Zoology of Saint Volodymyr University, where he taught courses in general zoology, animal organology, the taxonomy of mammals, birds, fish, reptiles, and invertebrates, as well as the history of zoology, and managed the zoological cabinet transferred to Kyiv University from the Kremenets Lyceum. The Nizhyn period of Andrzejowski’s life, associated with teaching natural sciences at Prince Bezborodko Lyceum, particularly zoology, botany, and mineralogy, is also characterized.

It was established that A. Andrzejowski was a world-renowned taxonomist who described more than 250 new taxa from 37 families of higher plants. The article outlines the scholar’s contribution to the formation of an herbarium that was long preserved at Saint Volodymyr University in Kyiv and was later transferred to the collections of the Flora of Ukraine at the National Herbarium of the M. G. Kholodny Institute of Botany of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. Andrzejowski’s faunistic, zoological, and paleontological scientific achievements are characterized. It was established that he studied entomofauna and the fauna of vertebrates, particularly the species composition of amphibians and reptiles. He initiated the systematic geological study of the Volhynian, Podolian, Kherson, and Kyiv provinces and was the only geologist in the Vilnius Educational District. His pedagogical and literary talents are also evaluated.
