The aim of the work is to review the materials, change the attitude to scientific research of folk shameful records and popularize rare books and manuscripts that contain such materials.
In the course of the research, a historical-comparative method was used, which allowed to establish that all spheres of people’s life are important, and any restrictions and prohibitions are unnecessary and inappropriate.
The scientific novelty lies in the appeal to the shameful materials of folk art, which still remain inconvenient and uncharacteristic of scientific ethnological and folklore studies. However, every mention of the existence of this branch brings about a change in attitudes towards the shameful and sexual in the everyday life of the Ukrainian ethnic group.
Folk art, rites and customs were recorded by a large number of amateurs and professionals. True scientists have always believed that the people’s worldview should be studied in full, without exception, and even more, ignorance and prohibition. But for a while, the recorders didn’t know what to do with these fixations. Only several of ascetics and initiators did almost impossible to get the texts published. There would not have been V. Kasatkin with his initiative and the collection contributed by O. Afanasiev, which was aptly called "…not for print…", would have remained a manuscript and the edition of "Russian Cherished Tales" with Ukrainian materials would never have appeared. Without the initiative of F. Vovk, V. Hnatiuk, F. Klaus, the records of famous writers and collectors would still be in the archives and were known only to a small group of specialists who had access to rare collections. The same situation is observed in the case of reprints of rare materials. Today in Ukraine only a few scientists are engaged in popularizing the rich achievements in the field of Ukrainian shameful folklore, customs and rites, and the direction is still unknown to the general public of not only ordinary readers but
also scientists.
