The scale of local lore research in Eastern Podillia in the second half of the ХІХ century – 20s of the ХХ century for the needs of agrarian science is determined. The forms of consolidation of the local intellectual community, whose purpose was to study the natural and historical features of the region in this period, are established. It is determined that the study of the natural features of the region was initiated by representatives of the intellectual elite, who united to consolidate resources into societies of various profiles – from scientific to sectoral. With the emergence of zemstvo in Podillia, the scope of research expanded significantly. The opening of higher education institutions in the region revived scientific work in this area and moved local history research into the academic field with close interaction with production, educated a whole galaxy of young specialists, which allowed the local history movement to become a mass movement in the 1920s. During these years, on the one hand, there was a diversity of public associations engaged in local history research, and on the other hand, the consolidation of local intellectuals in the development of the region.
