The article deals with the problem of studying the collection of frame hives of the many thousands of stock collection of the National Historical and Ethnographic Reserve «Pereyaslav» (hereinafter – NHER «Pereyaslav», the Reserve).

The collection of the studied objects began to be formed in the Reserve in the second half of the 1960s and includes 12 museum objects, which are accounted for in the inventory groups of the main and auxiliary funds. All of them belong to different ethnographic regions of Ukraine, collected during expeditions by museum staff to Kyiv, Cherkasy, Poltava, Chernihiv, and Khmelnytskyi regions.

The article describes in detail one of the stages of beekeeping development, which began in 1814, when P. Prokopovych invented the collapsible frame hive. This epoch-making discovery made it possible to separate the «wild» initial beekeeping, when bees were foraging in tree hollows, from the rational, scientific (frame-hive) one. The introduction of new beekeeping methods took place in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The article describes frame hives according to the available scientific and unified passports and inventory cards of the NHER «Pereyaslav» funds. Based on the documentation, their design features are studied. The dimensions, material and manufacturing techniques were identified. The period and place of use of these hives, the source of their acquisition by the museum, as well as the events and persons associated with the creation and use of beekeeping equipment are indicated.
