The article examines the main trends in the development of archival work, which took place over the past 35 years under the influence of information technologies. An analysis of the influence of the digital transformation of the humanitarian sector, the gradual introduction of information technologies on the emergence of new scientific directions and fields of knowledge, primarily electronic document studies and electronic document studies, and their place in digital humanitarianism as a generalizing field in the interdisciplinary relations of archivists, librarians, information technology specialists, lawyers, managers, etc. The history of one of the identified areas of activity related to the development of a scientific reference apparatus, which is the basis for the creation of metadata for information and search systems, which has not stopped since the introduction of electronic computers in the activities of archives and libraries, and which has always been defined as one of the priority the direction of work in the archival industry and subsequently had a planned nature, taking into account the challenges of the modern information society to meet its needs for free and convenient access to information on archival documents, later on the Internet as the front office of the archival industry.

Particular attention is paid to the issue of creating a back office in the form of a branch electronic information system as a powerful information basis for effective digital transformation of the activities of archival institutions of Ukraine. Existing projects for the creation of such a system were considered. Factors that have prevented the implementation of these projects into practical activity have been identified.

A description of the events that led the archival industry to certain decisions, some of which were successful, others led to the inhibition of the further development of the information system, outlined the current state of the rates of digitization of NAF documents and the creation of information and search systems, in particular integrating ones, and proposed ways of further development.
