The purpose of the article is to highlight and analyze the scientific and practical activities of V. P. Yurchak, the head of the department of orthopedics and traumatology in 1967–1996, during which the formation and further functioning of the orthopedic and traumatology department of the Children's Hospital «Okhmatdyt» (Kyiv) took place.

The historical origins of the establishment of the free hospital of Tsarevich Mykola for menial workers in 1894 and the role of the famous Kyiv philanthropist M. A. Tereshchenko in its establishment are highlighted. The stages of development of children's specialized clinical hospital No. 14 «Okhmatdyt» from 1957 under the leadership of Honored Doctor of the Ukrainian SSR T. P. Novikova are traced. The activities of Honored Doctor of Ukraine, Candidate of Medical Sciences V. P. Yurchak and the work of the Department of Orthopedics and Traumatology headed by him in 1967–1996 were analyzed. Confirmation was found that during the period of his leadership, the performance indicators of the department and the quality of service at the trauma center were always high. The scientific work of V. P. Yurchak was highlighted and an inventory and analysis of his scientific works was carried out. The inventive and rationalizing work of the team of doctors led by him on the introduction of new methods of operative treatment and diagnostics was analyzed. The activities of secondary school No. 153 at the clinical base of the department of orthopedics and traumatology, which were of great importance for the social rehabilitation of children who needed long-term treatment, were briefly traced. It has been proven that the accumulated practical experience of V. P. Yurchak, scientific developments, inventions and rationalizing proposals for the treatment of orthopedic and trauma patients have become a solid foundation for further active scientific and practical research.
