Museums play an important role in the socio-cultural processes of any country. In the conditions of difficult economic transformations and education reform, the study and analysis of the development of the museum business in Ukraine is an urgent issue. The purpose of the article: to analyze the main periods of development of the History Museum of the Kyiv Polytechnic Institute (1963–2009) and to find out the actual date of its foundation. The proposed article is the first exploration of the chosen topic. The source base of the research was made up of unpublished archival documents of the Igor Sikorsky National Technical University and the Borys Paton State Polytechnic Museum at the Igor Sikorsky National Technical University, which were introduced into scientific circulation for the first time.

The author used historical-comparative and historical-genetic research methods. For the first time, a scientific periodization of the history of this museum is proposed, which will greatly facilitate research work for scientists, because the entire development of the museum unit is clearly and logically traced here. Attention is focused on the analysis of key events in the history of the birth and development of the KPI History Museum (now – the National Technical University of Ukraine «Ihor Sikorskyi Kyiv Polytechnic Institute»). The influence of external factors on the formation of the museum exposition was studied. Attention is focused on the rather complex relationship between the museum asset and the management of the educational institution. Attention is drawn to the long struggle of museum workers to grant the Museum a full-fledged status, expand its staff and increase the funding of the unit. However, this struggle did not always have positive consequences (in the end, it was transformed into a department of the State Polytechnic Museum at NTUU «KPI»). It was found that during the «Soviet» era, the Museum mainly played the role of the ideological mouthpiece of the then ruling party; this state of affairs practically remained until Ukraine regained its independence. It has been proven that for some time two expositions on the history of the Communist Party of Ukraine coexisted: the «old» one with communist myths and the «new» one, which more or less corresponded to the needs of the post-colonial era.
