The aim of the article is to assess the contribution of P. Havlyuk (1925-2001) to the development of archaeological science and the study of ancient history of Vinnytsia region and Southern Bug area in general during the most productive period in the scientist’s research career – the 1970’s. The research is based on the principles of historicism and objectivity, problem-chronological approach and historiographical critique. It is concluded that P. Khavliuk’s scientific publications of the 1970’s covered an extremely wide chronological range of the history of Southern Bug and Middle Dnister regions: from the Neolithic to the late Middle Ages, which allowed creating a comprehensive picture of the historical development of the region over several millennia. P. Khavliuk’s approach was characterized by complexity and depth of analysis. He did not limit himself to a simple description of archaeological finds, but sought to reconstruct various aspects of the life of ancient communities. The researcher paid special attention to the development of crafts, particularly metalworking, which allowed him to draw important conclusions about technological progress and economic relations in the region. While studying material culture, P. Khavliuk also investigated the social structure of ancient societies, their burial rites and beliefs. This allowed creating a multidimensional picture of the life of ancient peoples who inhabited the studied region. An important aspect of P. Khavliuk’s work was establishing connections between different cultures and periods. He sought to deeply investigate the features of ethnocultural evolution in the region, paying special attention to the formation and development of Slavic communities. His research demonstrated the complexity and continuity of historical processes in this territory. Analysing archaeological data, P. Khavliuk also paid attention to economic ties between different settlements and cultures. This gave him the opportunity to reconstruct trade routes and understand the nature of intercultural contacts in the region. P. Khavliuk’s comprehensive approach, which combined the analysis of material culture with the reconstruction of socio-economic processes and predicted traditional archaeological methods with interdisciplinary research, including the use of natural science methods, is an important contribution to the development of Ukrainian archaeology.
