| Summary |
|
The article provides comprehensive information on the process of gasification and electrification in Germany, using the city of Hannover as a case study, highlighting the history of gas and electrical enterprises in the country at the turn of the 19th to the 20th century. It presents information on early attempts to use gas during the initial stages of the industrial revolution and the research carried out by scientists in this field, particularly in Great Britain and the Netherlands. It is noted that the beginning of gasification in Hanover dates back to 1825, with the construction of the first gas plant. The choice of the city for the creation of the British enterprise was due to the union between Hannover and Great Britain. The article also references gasification and electrification efforts in other German cities. An important milestone was the installation of gas lamps on the streets of Hanover. It is emphasized that the enterprise developed thanks to the involvement of foreign companies and only in the 1920s did it become part of the city’s municipal services. The beginning of electrification in Hannover dates back to 1891, when the first municipal electric station was launched. Information is provided on the equipment and capacity of electric stations in central Hannover and its suburbs. The gradual expansion of electric networks, the launch of new electric plants in the suburbs, and the transition from direct current to three-phase systems made electric power available to a larger part of the population. At that time, an association of electrical engineers was established in Germany to serve as a unified organizational and regulatory bode. Data is provided on the tariff system and electricity sales volumes. The article also covers the largest industrial consumers at the time. Under the leadership of Heinrich Tramm, the city experienced rapid infrastructure development: from the construction of power plants to the incorporation of new residential areas, which allowed meeting the growing energy and housing needs of the workforce. At the same time, the article highlights the regulations introduced by the government to limit the consumption of energy resources during World War I. It is noted that the plants and enterprises supplying gas and electricity faced high costs in building and expanding production capacities. However, over time, the demand for electricity grew, which stimulated the expansion of plants and the modernization of technologies. Thus, the material of the article reflects an important part of Germany’s industrialization at the end of the 19th – beginning of the 20th century and the role of energy technologies in the development of cities.
