Summary

This article is dedicated to the scientific legacy of Edward Felix Vincent Ostrovski (1816–1859), a distinguished veterinarian, talented educator, and one of the founders and directors of the Veterinary School in Warsaw. He also served as a professor at the Kharkiv Veterinary School, which became his second homeland in Ukraine.

For the first time in Ukrainian translation, this publication presents his work «Report on the Imperial Russian Veterinary School in Kharkiv by Professor Ostrovski», originally published in 1856 in the German journal Magazin für die gesammte Thierheilkunde («Journal for All Veterinary Medicine»). This historical document is of great significance as it sheds light on the early years of the Kharkiv Veterinary School, established in 1851 based on the practical veterinary school operating within Kharkiv University.

Continuing their previous research on the scholar, the authors aim to introduce this previously unknown historical document into academic circulation. The article presents Ostrovski’s 1856 description of the Kharkiv Veterinary School along with his biography, compiled from previously undiscovered archival records from Lithuania, Poland, and Ukraine. Applying the methodology of biographical studies, the article offers a concise yet insightful overview of his life and contributions.

This article reveals an unknown chapter of Ostrovski’s scientific heritage. In his work, the scholar depicts the Kharkiv educational institution as a living organism, where all elements – facilities, material resources, faculty, and students – form a unified whole. Of particular importance is the information about his colleagues, views on the state of veterinary science, and the specifics of the educational process.
